Mental Health as a Risk Factor for COVID-19:  A Population Health Assessment of the Pandemic (PART I:  Initial Findings)

The presentation will highlight the correlation between COVID-19 and its impact on mental health in Colorado.  The innovative study is based on Trajectory’s epidemiological-based AI software using the  Colorado All Payers Claim Data Base. Key population health trends show:

  • Preexisting mental health conditions are a strong independent predictor of COVID-19; and
  • A combination of a mental health diagnosis, in combination with diabetes and/or hypertension, has a very strong multiplier effect on COVID-19 incidence.

We believe this study is among the first to discover depression, anxiety and other mental health conditions as a predictor of COVID-19.  The presentation will feature two nationally known thought leaders in the population health field and will include a respondent panel made of experts.

Population Health Case Study:  Using Focused Analytics, Price-based Contracting, and a Culture of Trust to Improve Care and Lower Costs for Coal Miners and Their Families

Summary:

The presentation will highlight how focused data analytics and price-based contracting, all driven by a “culture of trust” promotes the triple aim of increasing patient satisfaction, improving the health of populations, and reducing per capita costs of medical care.  This case study looks at the successes and challenges associated with an innovative self-insured health plan, which offered a number of dynamic solutions for coal miners and their dependents from 2010 to 2020.

The session highlights key attributes of the population health interventions which utilized data analytics, tiered providers, case managers who focused on super utilizers, and clinical measures.  This led the health plan to invest more in mental health diagnosis and treatment, along with telemedicine programs to optimize the results.  Don’t miss the opportunity to learn from this successful population health program.

The Role of Mental Health Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic:  A Population Health Assessment using Colorado Claims Data (PART II:  Follow-Up Findings)

Sponsored by Trajectory Healthcare

With the ever-changing face of COVID-19, this webinar follows-up on the first Population Health Impact Institute (PHII) study, which reported earlier this year.  The presentation will highlight the correlation between COVID-19 and its impact on mental health in Colorado.  It examines overall utilization during the pandemic, with a focus on mental health diagnoses in both COVID-19 patients and a matched community reference group.

The innovative study is based on Trajectory’s epidemiological-based AI software using the Colorado All Payers Claim Data Base. Key population health trends show:

  • Preexisting mental health conditions are a strong independent predictor of COVID-19; and
  • A combination of mental health, with diabetes and/or hypertension, is a very strong multiplier effect on COVID-19 incidence.

A Population Health Based Solution for Promoting Mental Health Parity:  The Business Case for Behavioral Health Care Using Time-Series Analyses

The presentation will showcase how mental health conditions are costing millions of dollars and decreasing population health outcomes. The new findings are backed by an epidemiological analysis of claims data, which document how undertreated mental health and substance use disorders (MH/SUD) – especially when accompanied by physical co-morbidities –lead to a higher cost in the future.   The webinar will feature several national experts who will explain how earlier coverage of behavioral health conditions will improve clinical outcomes and lower costs for the entire insured population.

Although regulatory requirements such as The Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 (MHPAEA) have increased the spotlight on mental health, a population health strategy can have more immediate and long term impact on improving the health status for both MH/SUD and medical/surgical conditions.  The expert panel will highlight why health plan sponsors and third parity administrators (TPAs) should be investing more resources into the mental health needs of targeted populations with complex, conditions.  The study was conducted using the Colorado All Payers Claims Data Base and Trajectory Healthcare’s data analytic engine.
